German language and culture are centuries old, but political unification of Germany was effected only in the last quarter of the 19th century. That was rudely interrupted at the end of the World War II when West and East Germanies, democratic and socialistic states came into existence. From 1990 they were reunified. Today Germany has a strong economy and is a leading member of the European Union. Its industrial and technological advancement has resulted in a high standard of living for the people. There is a substantial immigrant population in Germany. Its great cities like Berlin, Stuttgurt, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne etc. attract tourists from all over Europe the world.
