Munich

Multi-dimensional charms of Munich

North of Bavarian Alps, on the banks of river Isar, Munich, the third largest city in Germany, nestles in a magnificent manner. The city has a hoary past from 12th century and is named so by honouring Benedictine monks. The city has had a turbulent history and for a very brief time during 1919 a communist government was in power. This was also Hitler’s stronghold.

But today’s Munich is one of the most modern cities and acclaimed as one with a very high quality of life and expensive one too. It has a lead in information technology, bio technology and in publishing fields.

There are plenty of architectural marvels in Munich. The two world wars destroyed a number of buildings but the reconstruction took care of some of the old values but added a new dimension in the form of modern architecture. Therefore we have a splendid combination of fine specimens of old architecture from 13th, 14th centuries to some of the newest designs of the 20th century.

The old and new town hall—blending of the very old and the new is a great attempt to synthesise what is left of the past with the fine aesthetic value of the present. Marienplatz is a feast to the eyes with old towers and remnants of castle nicely integrated with new structure.  The Palace of Justice and a fountain nearby are additional attractions. The Peterkirche is the oldest church soaked with grace and elegance. The Frauenkirche is another significant landmark, a cathedral of rare charm. There are other great structures representing baroque architecture which are of significant interest.

The four grand Royal Avenues of 19th century are a delight to the tourist’s appetite for visiting elegant and graceful places. Though these house many official buildings the beauty of the buildings are not just functional but quite ornamental. Ludwigstrabe, Maximilineum, the Residence and National Theatre are some of the landmarks in these avenues. There are numerous museums, fine buildings and a green ambience. Two fine royal palaces, Nymphenburg and Oberschleibheim add to the aesthetic pleasure. They are of baroque inspiration.

The BMW headquarters building is a marvel to look out. The design and elegance and the fresh architectural approach simply leave us astounded! Arabella High-rise Building, Highlight Towers and Uptown Munich are some more examples of this kind.

There are plenty of parks and gardens that afford a peace in communion with nature. Notable among them is Englischer Garten, one of the largest parks in the world! Olympiapark and West Park, too add grace to the city’s natural spots.

The Deutsche Museum, Glypothek and a host of museums in diverse fields of human activities are a veritable source of delight for the intellectual pursuit.Culturallly Munich has very rich traditions. The great theatres, concert and opera halls specialise in dramas and music performances, classical and modern. There are delightful music festivals which attract huge crowds from all over Germany and Europe.

Night life is equally entertaining and lavishing in Munich. There are hundreds of nice pubs, restaurants to whet the appetite of food lovers and wine lovers. Some of the finest local made beers and wines are also attractions for tourists. A certain air of elegance permeates the atmosphere befitting the affluence of the city.

From star hotels to budget hotels, the accommodation requirements of the tourists are taken care of. The hospitality of Munich is a by word in its culture. Tourists are delighted with the services and the orderly manner in which things take place. There is no dearth of transport facilities. Whether business or academic conferences, the needs of the group are fully taken care of.
